Tea Treasures Select Gift Box
Four of Makaibari's most cherished teas, each in a 25g pouch. First Flush, Second Flush, a roasted black, and a Darjeeling Green — the essential arc of the estate in a single box.
Four teas. Two seasons. One estate.
Makaibari was established in 1859 — the world's first tea factory. For over 160 years, the estate has produced some of the most coveted teas on earth from a single hillside in Kurseong, practicing biodynamic agriculture before the term existed.
The Select box is a distilled introduction: four teas chosen to show the full character of Makaibari across the year, from the first tender shoots of spring to the deep flavours that summer brings. A considered gift for someone tasting Darjeeling for the first time — or the hundredth.
Six ridges, three rivers, one estate. Everything in this box was grown, picked and packed inside that boundary.
What's inside
A harmonious union of nature and craft. This spring harvest black tea carries the delicate brightness of Darjeeling's first picking — floral, light, and luminous.
The celebrated muscatel character of Darjeeling's summer harvest. Rich, amber, with a distinctive grape-like sweetness that made Makaibari famous.
A post-harvest roast that deepens the character of Darjeeling black tea — earthy, warming, with a smoky finish that lingers pleasantly.
The first green tea from Darjeeling, developed by Makaibari in the early 1980s. Pale green leaves interwoven with silver streaks; clean, grassy, meditative.
Every tea in this box is grown at Makaibari, the world's oldest tea factory estate, sitting at 1,500–2,000 metres in the Himalayan foothills of Kurseong. The estate practices biodynamic agriculture — no pesticides, no herbicides — in harmony with the surrounding forest.
This selection spans two distinct flushes: the delicate spring (First Flush) and the fuller summer harvest (Second Flush), plus a roasted variant and a Darjeeling Green that show the range of what a single estate can produce.
Each pouch contains 25g of loose leaf tea — approximately 10–12 cups. Use 2–3g per 200ml and adjust to taste. The right water temperature is what separates a good cup from a great one.
Measure the leaf
Use 2–3g per 200ml cup. A heaped teaspoon is a reliable starting point. Increase for a stronger brew, decrease for delicate whites and greens.
Heat the water
Black teas: 95°C. Green teas: 80°C. Never use a rolling boil for green — it scalds the leaf and turns the liquor bitter.
Steep
Use a warmed teapot or infuser. Pour water gently. Steep for the time on each pouch label — First Flush and Green: 2–3 min; Second Flush and Roasted: 3–4 min.
Strain and serve
Strain into a pre-warmed cup. The muscatel and roasted teas hold up well to a splash of milk. First Flush and Silver Green are best served without.
