PARTNERSHIP, NOT OWNERSHIP
Makaibari is located in darjeeling—sprawled over steep mountain ridges. Darjeeling being one of the best hill stations in india, gets tourists year round and makaibari has become a popular visitor destination over the years.
“Volunteer in Makaibari” is an independent self-help group, managed by a group of Makaibari’s youth wing, spearheaded by Nayan Lama.
It was established in 2008 by a group of Western visitors who were frustrated about how huge amounts of money were being paid to tour organizations in the Western world and how little it reached the targeted villages for their well-being. The only real way to manifest change was to give its onus and responsibility to the local people— the intent from the very beginning.
They are responsible for coordinating local tourism. It facilitates the upliftment of the local residence/village houses to accommodate visitors from all over the world—for a long or short or even a day visit to Makaibari.
Enthusiastic youths have pioneered projects in all six villages that will enable all visitors to feel they have contributed to improving the lifestyle of the locals—irrespective of their duration of stay or level of skills. They have also organized an initiative that provides additional income apart from their tea estate earnings, to the local females.
